In 2022, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released its updated policy on breastfeeding, which included a call to state and federal governments and business leaders to offer more support to parents who choose to breastfeed. In a surprising turn of events, people in power listened, and the PUMP Act was passed in December 2022, providing more protections for pumping parents and requiring employers to accommodate them better. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that in 2019, 83.2% of newborns are fed breastmilk, but that number drops to 55.8% by the time the baby reaches six months of age. Now, with more support in place for breastfeeding parents, the hope is that the majority of parents who are able to will have an easier time keeping their milk supply up and continue feeding their babies breastmilk well past the six-month mark.

But nursing parents need to be able to live their lives and can’t be expected to be with their baby any time hunger strikes. Breast pumps help bridge that gap, allowing a parent to express and store breast milk in a safe, sanitary way when they are away from their little one. Breast pumps have become a must-have item for new parents, and thanks to the Affordable Care Act, nearly every health insurance plan is required to provide parents with a new breast pump—free of charge. Now the only question is, which model is the right one for you?
