Trying to conceive? Sometimes a pregnancy doesn’t just happen. Whether you’re just getting started or it’s been a few months, knowing when you ovulate can significantly increase your chances. This is where an ovulation predictor test kit comes in.

You have 12 to 24 hours after the egg is released (a.k.a. ovulation) to get pregnant, according to the Mayo Clinic. If the egg isn’t fertilized in this window, pregnancy usually isn’t possible. While you can track symptoms, such as changes in your cervical mucus or basal body temperature, a test kit takes some of the mystery out of this process.

Between the high-tech digital trackers, simple traditional stick dips, and all the other kits on the market, you may not know which pick is the right choice to predict your best days to get pregnant. Here are some of our favorites to get you started.

What are ovulation kits?

As the name implies, these are kits that help to predict or track ovulation. The test analyzes your urine, looking for traces of certain hormones. More specifically, most test kits detect a rise in luteinizing hormone (LH). The pituitary gland secretes this hormone, triggering a woman’s reproductive system to jump into action.

Women who have average or typical periods usually have an LH surge sometime around the second week of the menstrual cycle. This sudden surge causes ovulation. If you can detect a rise in LH levels, it’s likely that you will ovulate soon or are ovulating. Knowing when you are about to ovulate can help you to time when you try to conceive.

Ovulation predictor or tracking kits vary based on the technology each brand uses. Some kits are straightforward strips that you dip into a cup of urine. These strips use a dye and line/double line method of detection. Other, more tech-savvy, tests have digital predictors that make interpreting the results easier. The highest-tech tests also come with a combo app that helps you to read the results and track ovulation over time.

When ovulation doesn’t happen: When to see a doctor

Infertility affects nearly one in five women ages 15 through 49 who are TTC for the first time, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This stat includes women who have tried unsuccessfully to get pregnant for at least one year.

You’ve tested and tracked, but pregnancy is still a no-go. When ovulation doesn’t happen, and you can’t conceive right away, you may want to take a wait-and-see approach – depending on your health, individual needs, and age. The CDC notes that women under the age of 25 with no known medical or fertility issues can wait one year before seeking help from a doctor. Women between the ages of 35 and 39 should only wait six months.

If you are 40 or over, you may want to talk to your OBGYN or a fertility specialist ASAP. Likewise, you shouldn’t wait to see a doctor if you have irregular periods, a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, a uterine or tubal condition or disease, diminished ovarian reserve due to chemotherapy, radiation, or a genetic disorder, or have a history of miscarriages.
