Safety is a must-have when it comes to anything your kiddo uses. Now that you’re a parent, you see the world differently. And this means reducing the risks to your child. While you can’t keep your little one in a bubble 24-7, you can take common-sense steps to minimize home and other similar hazards.
From the toys they play with to the crib they sleep in, the Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association (a.k.a. JPMA) certification is something you may see on the products your family uses daily.
But what does this “certification” mean?
Don’t worry if you’re new to the whole safety certification game. We’ve got you covered with the info you need on the JPMA, product standards, and what to look for!

Understanding: What does ‘JPMA-Certified’ mean exactly?
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association certifies infant and children’s products voluntarily. This means it isn’t mandatory or required for a brand to seek the JPMA-certification. However, it does show that the product meets the JPMA’s rigorous safety standards.
According to the JPMA, it tests 2,500+ products that fall under 29 categories. The umbrella or broad certification areas include nursery, on-the-go (such as strollers), playtime, feeding/nursing, safety, and infant/child care.
Common specific categories parents may look for include:
- bassinets and cradles
- high chairs
- infant swings
- play yards
- toddler beds
- baby monitors
- infant bath tubs
- crib mattresses
- sling carriers
- infant floor seats
- carriages and strollers
- cabinet locks and latches
Basically, anything your kiddo uses or you use to care for your child should fall under one of the JPMA’s many categories.
All certified products must meet or exceed the minimum federal safety requirements for the item’s use and safety. This includes the requirements of the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). Products must also meet ASTM International standards and all applicable state safety laws.

Why should I look for JPMA-certified baby products?
JPMA-certified products have undergone strict testing procedures for safety, the association explains. This helps parents to know that the products meet federal and state minimum standards. While the certification won’t tell you everything you need to know about your kiddo’s crib, stroller, or bath-time ring, it will help you choose safer products.
Among the many testing measures the JPMA uses, this certification looks at the lead, mercury, and cadmium content of items your child uses daily, tests for the presence of some VOCs such as formaldehyde, follows state/federal regulations for phthalate content, and makes sure that products follow PFAS chemical regulations.
The tests that the JPMA’s independent labs provide and the standards the association follows can guide your product choices. While price, features, style, design, and personal preferences majorly impact the baby gear products you invest in, safety is an overriding factor you can’t ignore.
With the JPMA-certification, you can have peace of mind in knowing that the toys, bathing, bedtime, traveling, strolling, and other items you select have an extra level of safety testing behind them. And, while you can’t control every risk in your kiddo’s life, this is one way to reduce potential hazards.
